HATE BILL DEFEATED IN SENATE, YET DANGER REMAINS
By Rev. Ted Pike
On the National Day of Prayer countless Americans prayed for Divine
protection for America. The next day, May 5, 2006, the federal "anti-hate" bill
was again defeated.
Overwhelmed by massive public outrage, Sen. Kennedy gave up his
insistence that his hate bill come before child-protecting legislation.
He allowed the Child Help National Registry Act, S.1086, to pass
unanimously.
This year's temporary defeat of Sen. Kennedy and his ADL-inspired
hate bill, the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act of 2005, S.1145,
was a victory very different from last fall's defeat of the same
legislation.
Here's what happened this time around:
On October 20, 2005 Sen. Kennedy compromised with Republican members
of the Senate Judiciary Committee and squandered sure victory for
his hate bill. (See, "How Kennedy and His Pedophiles Weakened
the Child Safety Bill") From that moment, Bill Frist, Senate
majority leader, determined not to allow Kennedy to recoup his loss
by attaching his hate bill. Kennedy planned to do this just as soon
as the children-protecting legislation came onto the floor of the
Senate. Result: For two sessions of the Senate, spanning more than
six months, Frist kept the children's bill bottled up, deeply frustrating
ADL and Kennedy.
Apart from a few legislative insiders and those I have informed
by radio and e-mail, the world had no idea why legislation protecting
children from pedophiles should be delayed. Frist was mum. So was
Kennedy. Even political savants like Larry King and Bill O'Reilly
were baffled. On Larry King's Apr. 20th interview with Sen. Kennedy,
King asked him pointedly why the children's bill was not moving forward.
Kennedy evaded the question.
Kennedy did indicate he was imminently planning to call for a vote
on his hate bill the moment Frist released the children's bill for
a vote.
TAKING THE OFFENSIVE
I have been waiting since the October 20th defeat of the hate bill
in Judiciary to detect ADL/Kennedy strategy. With celebrities like
Kathie Lee Gifford demanding passage of the children's bill, I had
a gut instinct that the Kennedy/Frist stand-off would soon come to
a showdown in the Senate. It was clear Kennedy was now poised to
marshal a vote from a Senate which had overwhelmingly favored his
hate bill 65 to 33.
On Tuesday, April 25th, I sent an e-alert, warning my list of 5,000.
This included 250 Christian/conservative talk show hosts and numerous
media outlets, including many on the staff of WorldNetDaily, which
is the only media watchdog consistently warning against hate laws.
I informed my readers of a fact virtually unknown to the media
and public: The children's bill had been stalled for more than six
months solely because Frist was determined not to let Kennedy attach
his hate bill to it.
THE O'REILLY FACTOR
Bill O'Reilly has been advocating sex offender registration for
the past several years. But like Larry King, he has apparently never
understood the real reason for the blockage of the children's act.
On Tuesday, April 25th, my e-alert went out. During the next two
days, O'Reilly became electrified with anger, suddenly focusing on
Kennedy as the culprit standing in the way of the children's bill.
He called Sen. Frist, who confirmed that indeed Kennedy had been
blocking the children's bill for the last six months. Frist urged
O'Reilly to marshal America in protest against Kennedy.
On Thursday, April 27th, O'Reilly and John Walsh launched a major
TV and Internet attack on Kennedy. They demanded his hate bill get
out of the way.
Did my e-alert, identifying Kennedy as the real culprit, influence
O'Reilly? I'll probably never know for sure. All that really matters
is that O'Reilly and Walsh at last acquired clarity on this issue.
Such clarity ignited anger in them and in millions of Fox television
viewers. The heat of such anger melted Kennedy's resistance -- and
the immediate threat of his hate bill.
MISBEGOTTEN ALLIANCE
I had thought House Republicans very foolish to allow attachment
of a pro-homosexual hate bill to one intended to protect children
from sexual predators. Yet in the end, such a combination turned
out to be a mighty providence from God. The children's bill was created
by conservative Republicans and widely supported by Americans. Its
benevolence toward children created a powerful force that pushed
Kennedy and his ADL hate bill out of the middle of the road and into
the ditch.
O'Reilly and Walsh's campaign to elicit calls to Kennedy's office
was devastating to Kennedy's cause. Unfortunately, however, it did
not educate either Congress or the public against hate laws.
My intensive campaign on alternative talk radio generated thousands
of calls to every member of the Senate. It informed them that countless
Americans are opposed to hate legislation. We will not vote for senators
who pass such freedom-stealing laws.
WHERE WAS THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT?
This victory is quite different from the one that defeated the
hate bill in the Senate Judiciary last October. At that time, Christian
conservative leaders such as James Dobson, Beverly LaHaye, and Jerry
Falwell inspired a tidal wave of calls to the Senate. This time,
apart from Bill Frist, the leaders of the religious and conservative
Right did not play a significant role. I am unaware of any statements
by national evangelical or conservative leaders informing us of the
imminent danger posed by the hate bill.
Instead, the momentum to push Kennedy out of the way came from
viewers of the O'Reilly Factor and thousands of dedicated activists
within heartland America who listened to me on alternative talk radio
and called all 100 members of the Senate.
HATE BILL DANGER STILL THREATENS
What is the future of the Kennedy/ADL hate bill? Thankfully, it
cannot be added during the upcoming conference between the House
and the Senate on the children's bill.
Regretfully, I was told by Sen. Frist's office that Kennedy can,
at any time, attempt to attach his hate bill, S.1145, to other bills
throughout this session of Congress. I was assured that Sen. Frist
will continue to block Kennedy's attempts, even stalling legislation
again if required.
If Frist is successful throughout this term of Congress (which
is not a certainty), the hate bill which the House passed last September
(Amdt.2662) will lapse next November. It will then be necessary for
ADL lackeys to reintroduce the hate bill in the House and Senate
Judiciary Committees in 2007.
Clearly, Frist needs our support now as much as ever. Kennedy could
at any minute attempt to slide the hate bill through the Senate on
the underbelly of some inconspicuous legislation. We must continue
to pressure all Senate members not to vote for this most dangerous
assault on free speech.
WHAT WE CAN DO
Clearly, lovers of free speech must gird themselves for a prolonged
fight to keep America from drifting into a federal anti-hate bureaucracy
like Canada's. The very least each of us should do is to continue,
as constituents of U.S. senators, to inform them as clearly as possible
that if they vote for hate laws we, our friends, our church, etc.,
will not vote for them at the next election.
On the brighter side, as a result of the controversy each time
ADL and Kennedy try to pass a federal hate law, many more Americans
become educated concerning the danger of hate laws. In fact, popular
understanding of the threat of hate laws has grown exponentially
during the last several years. Yet we must continue to accelerate
such education for our friends, our church, and our elected officials.
Get my dynamic 80-minute video, "Hate Laws: Making Criminals
of Christians." Lend it to your pastor. Show it to as many as
possible. Keep phoning all 100 senators. Tell them how similar hate
laws have taken away free speech in Canada. Invite senate staffers
to www.truthtellers.org to read my detailed analysis of S.1145. Remind
them periodically you will not vote for them if they vote for hate
laws. Keep coming to www.truthtellers.org for the latest alerts.
GOD WILL SAVE US IF WE CALL TO HIM
Just as importantly, we must humble ourselves before God. What
we have seen, time and again, is that the hate bill goes down in
defeat, not because of our political strength or organization, but
because God Himself causes confusion within the ranks of hate bill
promoters. If we humble ourselves before Him (II Chron. 7:14) and
turn from our wicked ways, He has promised that He will hear from
heaven and intervene to preserve free speech.
A courageous band of patriotic, freedom-loving talk show hosts
keeps putting me up as a sentry on the highest "wall" available,
that of internet talk radio. Thanks to them, I am able to sound the
alarm when the enemy approaches.
The talk show hosts who heeded my call during the last several
weeks of crisis in the Senate are true Americans and defenders of
freedom. They deserve our confidence and support. They are:
