HATE BILL READY FOR A VOTE
By Rev. Ted Pike
26 Sep 07
Today
in the Senate, Sen. Kennedy demanded a vote on his hate crimes bill,
S.A. 2067. Since he co-sponsored it, no one could withstand
him - not even
Senate minority leader McConnell, who we hoped might filibuster.
The vote is delayed till tomorrow. If you love freedom, you have
a little more time to call your two Senators and demand a "no" vote. Call
toll free 1-877-851-6437 or toll 1-202-225-3121.
We surveyed 38 Senators today and found the same relatively small
protest we reported yesterday. A few offices said they received
many calls; most reported only a few; some said none.
There is no strong outcry because large Christian/conservative
organizations are still failing to provide up-to-date warnings. Visit
the following organizations' websites and be astonished at the total
lack of timely warnings as of Tuesday morning: Focus
on the Family, Concerned
Women for America, American Family
Association, Traditional
Values Coalition, Faith
2 Action, and Family
Research Council.
This morning a Christian activist friend called Family Research
Council desperately trying to reach anyone able to write an emergency
alert. She told FRC that protest to the hate bill was small and conservative
leaders are doing nothing.
A spokesman replied, "You can't say nothing is being done." He
referred to one paragraph by director Tony Perkins about the hate
bill, buried in a fundraising and prayer letter last Wednesday.
"Can't you do anything?" she pleaded.
"We're keeping a close watch on these events," he said,
displaying the same wait-and-see attitude that has allowed the hate
bill to get this far.
If this legislative rattlesnake is given life by the Senate, even
if Bush vetoes it, it won't lie still for long. It will rise,
poisonous and deadly, the first week of January 2009 in the 111th
Congress. It will have the power of legislation already passed by
the Congress of the United States of America . It may then be rapidly
passed and signed into law by a probably pro-hate bill President.
Well-meaning but short-sighted conservative leaders may be saving
their readers' flagging energies for defeat of ENDA (The Employment
Non-Discrimination Act, H.R. 2015). ENDA is also very dangerous legislation.
Yet it will almost certainly pass the House of Representatives, as
did the hate bill in May. Then, in the Senate, ENDA could also be
very hard to defeat.
Meanwhile, if the federal hate crimes bill passes tomorrow, freedom
of speech will be on the way to extinction. The very arguments with
which conservatives oppose ENDA and homosexual activism will quickly
become illegal. They will be despised as hate speech – verbal
violence!
At this eleventh hour, true American leaders must loudly and firmly
oppose the federal hate crimes bill that threatens the very foundation
of our country. Without freedom of speech, we will have no weapons
left to fight any other battle. This is a call to arms. Publish calls
to action at the top of your websites. Call your Senators. Demand
they vote no! Stand up NOW.
It's almost too late.
CALL YOUR 2 SENATORS!
